The African Nations Cup

The major football event going on now would certainly be the on-going African Cup which is an African version of the European cup. 16 teams represent their countries to do battle on the field in pursuit of the highest football trophy in the continent. What used to be an ignored tournament for the rest of the world has now caught the interest of a lot of foreign observers. For one thing the quality of play has improved as more Africans play in other major leagues of the world. With players like Samuel Eto of Barcelona playing for Cameroon and Didier Drogba showing skills for Ivory Coast it is not hard to imagine with interest in world soccer is increasing.

The African Nation Cup tournament always takes its toll on other major leagues of the world when it is going on. This edition however seems to be worse than previous years as more teams in Europe rely heavily on their African players. Most of these players have had to return to honor National call and this has left a gap on the team which undoubtedly spent millions on the player. Worst hit would be the English Premiership of England and the French Championat in France. In England, teams like Portsmouth have had to lose as much as 6 African players to the African Nations cup. For many of such teams the competition cannot end soon enough.
