Policeman Apologizes

Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats had a family emergency last week. His mother-in-law was dying in the hospital and was in a bit of a rush. Perhaps he was speeding or coasted through a red light or stopsign. It’s not completely clear what had happened, but a police officer happened to be there and stopped him in the hospital parking lot. He drew his weapon in an over-abundance of caution. But he held Moats in that parking lot for an extended period of time, to give him a ticket and lecture. After another officer came and some hospital personnel came out to tell the officer that the mother-in-law was actually dying, the officer still held him. She died and Moats & his wife couldn’t be there for it. The officer was put on admin leave until the investigation is complete. The chief said that it wasn’t improper action, but it was inconsiderate and lacking in common sense. The officer has apologized, and said he was embarassed.

Cutler Saga Forever

When you look at the NFL and take a look at the news feeds involved, you will see lots of information about Jay Cutler. The guy is still at the center of the controversies now. It’s not that he’s a bad guy, but he’s still upset about what happened between him and the Broncos the last month or so. At at owners meeting this week, there are lots of different teams interested in him, from Detroit to Minnesota and several other teams. Almost anyone who still needs a QB wants to get Cutler on their team. This guy is going to be an asset wherever he ends up playing and he will be much happier then too. Get ready, he might be coming to a team near you.

Cutler Still Upset

Jay Cutler of the Broncos is still in the news. A few weeks ago, he was sore about the fact that Denver coach Josh McDaniels was looking at Matt Cassel as a possible addition to the team. Cutler is the starter and wanted to keep that position. There was a very public dispute that the two had, since McDaniels is new from New England and Cutler was informed beforehand that the offense wouldn’t be changing in any particular way. Over the weekend, Cutler, McDaniels and the GM (and various representatives of them) met up and had a discussion. Cutler didn’t like the result of the meeting and his agent has officially asked Denver for a trade. If he is traded, it’s not clear where he would go. And who would throw for Denver. It’s getting to be a complicated problem for them.

No Money?

We wrote about Michael Vick a couple weeks ago and now it’s clear that he’s very big in the news right now. There is still quite a bit of speculation about whether he’s in or out of football or which team might take him in when he returns. Now there is a small controversy brewing about a bankruptcy hearing that will be happening in court in Alexandria, Virginia. He wanted the law enforcement people to come get him from his jail in Kansas, where he’s in for dogfighting, and bring him to VA. But the judge just ruled that he had to pay his own way back. It seems like the judge didn’t buy his argument that Vick didn’t have enough money to come for the hearing. Read more here.

Big Names in Free Agency Week

Kurt Warner, Mike Vrabel, and Terrell Owens were only some of the players moving around during the first week of free agency this year. There are so many different kinds of players and each team needs something different. But Kurt Warner stuck with his own team, getting more or less the deal that he wanted in the first place. Vrabel went from New England to Kansas City, to join Matt Cassel in part. He will be trying to help the team get out of the basement and maybe get back to being a big team in the league. Friday, Owens was released from the Dallas Cowboys and he was immediately picked up during the weekend by Buffalo. It’s a great bunch of people that are available, and some teams are making big moves in anticipation of next year.

Warner will be Back

“I’ll Be Back” said Kurt Warner this week. He signed a 23 million dollar deal for two years with the Arizona Cardinals and he will be returning. This seems like a good idea for everyone involved. Warner is getting older and needs to have some of his more trusty WRs on his team. Arizona needs to have a quarterback right there on the team and a good one at that. Warner took them to the Super Bowl and might give you a real shot at winning it next year, despite the loss of a fair amount of coaching staff. It sounds to me as though everyone wins to a certain extent in doing this deal.

Breaking News

The NFL is a little bit rocked at the moment by some breaking news that two of their own went missing on a fishing boat this weekend. This took place in the Gulf of Mexico and it is a sad moment for people in the football world. This morning, a bit of news just came over the wires that the Coast Guard may have found the boat and that there was one person found clinging to it. This isn’t really well confirmed at the moment, and it’s not clear who that one person might be. The reports say that it is Nick Schuyler, a former college football player. This story will be developing throughout the day, so stay tuned for information about the Coast Guard search for Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper.
