A Decision!

I’m going to do a rare second post in a row about the same topic. Brett Favre finally made his decision about his future in football. And, in fact, he is out of football. He described it as one of his hardest decisions ever. In the process, he had rebuffed the big push that many of the Vikings players had put on him to get him in. He got text messages from a bunch of players to get him interested in playing for their team. In the end, he had decided that he wasn’t ready to play a full season with his injury and such. But there are a lot of people who are upset at him. Vikings fans looked like they might get to watch a major QB playing for their team. It looked very likely for awhile. But, at the last moment, he decided that he couldn’t do it. Why not make a decision before? Because Favre never does, if he can avoid it.

Brett Favre

Brett Favre’s world is an interesting one. It seems like he just can’t seem to decide whether to return to football or not. Or, more accurately, he can’t seem to decide whether to stay away or not. One day, he’s leaning towards playing again, another day he’s leaning away. Over the last several months, it’s been a full fledged train charging towards St. Paul and the Vikings for him. But let’s look back at the time since his last long-term employment. He spent a lot of offseasons over the years wavering back and forth on whether he’d play the next year. After his last season in Green Bay, he had a weepy press conference in which he stated that he was out for good. Denied rumors of a return for months. Then led the Pack on a long soap opera in which he was all wounded because they had trained a new QB and wanted to use him. So he came the Jets and wasn’t dominant there. Then he retired for good. Until now, when he’s going to come back again, it would seem. He’s definitely not one of the football players that just comes to work and does his job. He tries to be in the spotlight when he can. It’s always interesting anyhow.

Dolphins have famous Owners

The Miami Dolphins have got several very well-known owners this offseason. The team had been struggling, with lower attendance and dipping sponsorship. The team itself was ok last year, winning the tough AFC East over the Patriots and Favre-led-Jets. But the administration of the team has been looking for another way to market the team a little bit better for a world where the game is considered primarily an on-TV game and most people aren’t coming to the stadiums. But with singers Jimmy Buffett, Gloria Estevan and now Marc Anthony running the show, it’s going to be an entertaining year, with them trying some new things. Even just their star power might bring some fans to the stadium, especially if they’re singing a halftime show or the national anthem!

Free At Last

Michael Vick is a free man. After over two years in federal prison over a dogfighting ring and his involvement therein, he is now a free man. He will be aiming to rejoin the NFL, by all indications, and this may be an even more difficult proposition for him than was being in prison. He has a major PR problem that he will have to deal with at the earliest opportunity. In some ways, it will be easier because people haven’t been talking about the case for awhile. But in some ways it will take time and it will take him showing that he’s doing everything in good faith again. It will also be interesting to see what kind of a QB he turns out to be in this iteration. I know many football fans are hoping for him to become a better person from the experience and that he’ll be able to make a great comeback from the strength.

Dansby’s Franchise Tag

Karlos Dansby of the Arizona Cardinals has been given the franchise tag for yet another year. This happened because the team and the player’s people couldn’t get an agreement signed along the way. He’s a good player, but hardly deserves the franchise tag. After all, he led the team in tackles last season, so he’s obviously a player that they want to keep, but they wanted to actually have a real deal with him rather than simply plop the franchise tag on him. He will instead earn the average of the top five players at his position, which is somewhere in the high $9 million range. They could technically trade him, but you don’t want trade such a good player.

Favre Back

Brett Favre has entered into the world of the NFL. He showed his throwing ability to the Vikings offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell. It would have been a great place to be, just to be a fly on the stadium wall that day. Watching Favre throw about 100 passes, apparently, and see what he is able to do. There wasn’t any media there, so we don’t know if he was experiencing pain with his shoulder or anything like that. Favre and his reps, afterwards, said that they would probably be making their decisions a little bit later in the process. The Vikings start camp on the 29th in Mankato, but they might have to wait until the very last moment to make their actual decision. Favre is working hard to come back, obviously. It seems more and more likely that the only thing holding him back is his shoulder injury. And the Vikings wont be able to make any real decisions on their offense until they get that all figured out. Hopefully their offense isn’t too complicated for all their players to get onto the same page by the beginning of the season.

McNair Remembered

Steve McNair is being remembered today at his funeral. He was found murdered with a girlfriend last weekend and the NFL has been spending much of the last few days remembering him and wondering exactly how such a thing can happen. The celebrant at the funeral said that people should avoid throwing stones in the metaphorical sense, because he was human like the rest of us. We can expect a lot more speculation despite this, but at least he said it. McNair was a strong quarterback with the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens over the course of about a dozen years in the league. He came just a few yards short of getting a Super Bowl win at one point. We all at Football IMO offer our condolences to for him!

Quarterback Troubles Continue

In the NFL, the popularity and pressure that quarterbacks get must be hard to handle. Some players are able to deal with it, but some have a lot more trouble. Lately, there have been troubles with some of the quarterbacks. For one, Brett Favre has been under a cloud of whether he’s going to come back once more to stick it to the Green Bay Packers. This has put him in a position where animosity seems high. Worse, Michael Vick was in prison for about two years due to his dog-fighting conviction and people were upset about it. It’s still not completely clear whether he will be able to come back well or not. Finally, Steve McNair, the retired Tennessee quarterback, was found dead at home last weekend, having been shot by someone, though it’s still not clear exactly whom. The NFL might want to start looking at the situations of their quarterbacks and try to get them back to earth, instead of this Icarian flight that they get stuck in sometimes.

Twittering

The biggest new thing in the world is the website called Twitter, where a person can give their deep insights about the world in 150 characters or less. Even this blog entry would have been too long for 3 tweets by now. Twitter is one of the most popular pages on the web. But for some NFL stars, as well as those in other sports, it has become a thicket of impostors, where anyone can make a name like a celebrity. Davone Bess, a player with the Dolphins, was impersonated on Twitter and is now threatening to sue. Even though the tweeter person didn’t say anything particularly controversial, he did give answers as though he was on the inside of the Dolphins organization. Lawsuits against Twitter users have worked on occasion, but it’s a costly way to swat a fly.
