Arizona Good, Dallas Bad

 tonyromogettinsacked.jpg

In a week filled with upsets, last minute comebacks, and general head scratching for football fans, the Dallas Cowboys fell in a big way to the underdog Arizona Cardinals of the NFC west. As a game necessitating extra time to determine the winner, 64,389 fans in the Cardinals stadium witnessed the 30-24 shocking victory for the Cardinals that left each team with a 4-2 record, as well as different perspectives on themselves.

The Arizona Cardinals now feel like a team rejuvenated. To make a crucial stand at a home game against one of the top ranked and toughest teams in the NFL will do nothing less for team morale. The veteran and Super Bowl champion quarterback Kurt Warner, who had considered retirement just a couple short weeks ago, feels this could be a huge turning point for the franchise.

But the mirror of this game reflects much differently for Dallas who, now with a 4-2 record, is in third place in the powerhouse NFC East. The team is comprised of most of the same 13-3 squad from last year and yet they are struggling early on, as compared to last year when they were playing some of their best football at this time. The hope, however, for many players, fans, and coaches, is that working the kinks out right now will lead to quality play in the postseason, when winning matters most. That was the problem for the 13-3 Cowboys of last year, as well as the preceding team.

Cowboys Win Showdown

The Green Bay Packers stressed complete coverage on Dallas Cowboys’ receiver Terrell Owens for Sunday night’s prime time game and boy did it ever work. In the entire game, Owens was limited to only two catches for a total of 17 yards. Basically, Green Bay shut him down.

But they seemed to have forgotten about every other offensive weapon that the Cowboys have. While Owens was attracting double (and sometimes triple) coverage from the Packers’ secondary, backup receiver Mike Austin caught two huge passes totaling for 115 yards and what would prove to be the game winning touchdown.

In addition to his spectacular output, running back Marion Barber ran for 142 yards (career high) and a touchdown, and the secondary running back Felix Jones added  a 60-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

So at least for now, Dallas remains the team to be beaten in the NFC. This matchup between the Packers and Cowboys had experts predicting the winner to be the best team in the NFL. So, according to them, that’s the Cowboys. But then again, it is only week 3 and there are several other unbeaten teams in the NFL such as the Bills, Titans, and (defending Superbowl champions) New York Giants.

Terrell Owens did not take random drug tests

There have been media reports circulating about the Dallas Cowboys WR football player Terrell Owens missing the random drug test conducted by NFL a few weeks ago and when contacted Owens said that the problem occurred due to an error involving mobile phone numbers. It is reported that Owens had given his agent’s number as the primary contact number to the performance enhancing drug testers and the alternative number given to the testers led them to an overflowing voice mail box. Terrell Owens, in his defense, told the media that he had long discussions with the NFL officials and has agreed to co-operate with them in this matter. Terrell’s fans are waiting patiently with their tickets for the NFL season to begin.

Owens contract with Cowboys extended till 2011 season

Terrell Owens extended his contract with the Dallas Cowboys to a further three years and this will keep him playing for the Dallas team till 2011 season. Owens, a dedicated offensive football player, will be richer by $27 million and this contract will have him playing for the Cowboys till he turns 38 years old. There are all possibilities that Terrell Owens will take leave from the NFL scene as a Cowboy. Owens said that he was pretty happy to have signed the extension contract with the Cowboys and says that he will do all that he has in his stride to keep his team’s flag flying high. The tickets to the new season’s games are currently on sale.

Cowboys adopting wait and watch policy in free agency

The Cowboys who were on a signing spree in the last three free agency market seasons are looking to hold onto their dollars this season as they have decided to be relatively quiet in the free agency this year. The Dallas Cowboys have so far spent very wisely in the first week of the free agency and have focused on retaining Flozell Adams for another six years by shelling out $43.8 million. They have also tried to protect free agents Marion Barber for $2.56 million restricted tender, Ken Hamlin for $4.396 million with a franchisee tag and finally Chris Canty for $2.017 million restricted tag.

The Cowboys revealed that it is no small feat trying to hang on to the services of Adams for the Dallas team and the veteran offensive line was solely responsible for helping Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo break multiple passing records during the last season. The club now has about $4 million in its cap room and has traded Jackson Ferguson for a sixth round pick to the Dolphins. The Cowboys signed only one ranked outsider into the team so far and that is line back Zach Thomas who has agreed on a four year deal to play for the Dallas team. The Cowboys can still afford to make one or two bids in the free agency.

NY Giants vs Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys, 37, Green Bay Packers 27

Romo threw for 309 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Cowboys defeated the Packers 37-27 yesterday night to become the 2nd team to clinch an NFL playoff berth. Crayton caught 2 scoring passes and Folk kicked 3 field goals in Irving, as Dallas won the 2nd meeting between the National Football League teams with 10-1 records in thirty-seven years. Cowboys’ 6th straight win lifted the team ahead of Green Bay atop the NFC with 4 regular- season games left. Dallas can still clinch the NFC East Division title if the NY Giants (7-4) lose at Chicago (5-6) on December 2.

David Jacobs accuses Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys

footballimo.jpgAlthough both teams have denied any connection to him, a personal trainer in the Dallas area who shipped performance-enhancing drugs said he had ties to players on the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. David Jacobs pleaded guilty in United States District Court, signing a statement in which he said he was responsible for distributing 40 thousand units of anabolic steroids and several thousand units of human growth hormone.
