Sunday’s game can be called the Game of the Century or a pseudo-Super Bowl. Whatever you choose will work.
Sunday’s match is simply a precursor to what everybody is expecting to witness again in January: the rematch. While teams contend this is merely another November match, and an important one that could determine ramifications of the playoff, everyone else is building it up, with good reason. The Colts and the Pats are the latest two unbeaten teams have ever met in the National Football League. Indianapolis is 7-0, and New England 8-0.
There is also the classic coaching story line: Squeaky clean Tony Dungy, author of a Number 1 best-selling book and seemingly everyone’s favorite coach, again meets Bill Belichick, who has been accused of running up the score on opponents. There is also the headline attraction between NFL 2 marquee quarterbacks, Peyton Manning, the single-season record-holder for touchdown passes, versus 3-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady, who is ready to shatter Peyton’s record.
We can’t but mention the possibility of a win eventually earning home-field advantage in the playoffs and the match has more drama than anything this side of the Super Bowl.
Both teams have won 4 of the recent 6 Super Bowls and they know the difference between a postseason match and a regular-season game.
The Colts and the Patriots have met 7 times since splitting up as division rivals in 2002. New England won the1st four, Indianapolis the last 3. Each has won 1 conference championship game against the other, and while some of the names have changed, the key ones, like Manning and Brady, are still around.
